Men's Soccer Defeated by No. 7 Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md., SEPT. 5, 2016 – Against its first top-25 opponent of the regular season, the University of South Florida men's soccer team (0-2-2) dropped a 4-1 decision at No. 7 Maryland Monday.

Down 1-0, freshman Luis Garza (El Paso, Texas) scored his second goal in as many games to put the Bulls on the board in the 48th minute. Garza's equalizer was unassisted, five yards out, off a rebound from the goalkeeper.

The Terrapins' (3-0-1) Gordon Wild gave Maryland a 1-0 advantage in the 17th minute, and assisted Amar Sejdic's goal to regain the lead. Wild scored again in the 64th minute, and in the 88th minute, Keegan Kelly scored the Terps fourth and final goal.

Ricardo Gomez was given a red card in the 65th minute for sliding “studs up”, and the Bulls finished the game with 10 men on the field. Senior goalkeeper Spasoje Stefanovic (Belgrade, Serbia) made one save in 90 minutes of action.

Maryland outshot USF 11-6. USF had three shots on goal.

Luis Garza has scored goals in back-to-back games, and leads the Bulls with two goals on the season.  

Up Next:

USF returns to Tampa Thursday, and will play the second match of a soccer doubleheader at 8 p.m. The women's team will host Jacksonville at 5 p.m. before the men take on the Dolphins at 8 p.m. It will be the first of a four-match homestand for the Bulls.

The Bulls ended the 2015 campaign in the second round of the NCAA Tournament and an 11-6-3 overall record (5-1-2 The American).  Head coach George Kiefer was named the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) East Region Coach of the Year. Kiefer led USF to its eighth NCAA tournament appearance in the past nine years and earned the No. 2 ranking in the NSCAA East Region. The Bulls posted double-digit wins for the ninth time under Kiefer in 14 seasons and went undefeated at home during the regular season.
