TAMPA (Jan. 24, 2016)— The University of South Florida women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to Florida Gulf Coast in the opening match of the 2017 season.
Juliana Cardoso and Ana Roman Domniguez picked up the two singles wins for USF. Dominguez took down Maja Ornberg, 6-7(6), 6-3, 10-8 at the No. 1 spot. Cardoso defeated Sara Kelly at the No. 5 spot, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 for the Bulls second point of the day.
FGCU jumped out to an early lead by taking the doubles point with wins on courts three and one.
In singles play, Hailey Grillo was defeated, 6-1, 6-1, by Laura Falceto at the No. 6 spot to give FGCU a 2-0 lead. The Eagles would jump out to a 3-0 lead as Olga Martinez fell to Julia Ascua, 6-4, 6-1, on court three.
Sophomore Nicole Dzenga went to two tiebreakers and Vera Bessonova took her opponent to a third set, but neither could come away with a victory.
USF travels to Gainesville this weekend to take part in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. The Bulls will face FIU Saturday, Jan. 28, at 2 p.m.
