INDIAN WELLS, Calif. (March 19, 2017) – The USF men's tennis team fought for an intense 4-2 victory over SMU on the last day at the BNP Paribas Open Collegiate Tennis Challenge.

The Bulls went into singles leading, 1-0, and used their momentum to finish in straight sets on courts four and five and senior Sasha Gozun clinched the match in a third-set, 7-5, 5-7, 6-2 victory. On court four Peter Bertran went 6-2, 6-3 and Vadym Kalyuzhnyy won at No. 5 in a second-set tiebreaker, 6-2, 7-6(4).

Junior Justin Roberts went unfinished, and Alberto Barroso-Campos and Jakub Wojcik dropped their matches 6-4, 6-4 and 6-2, 5-7, 6-4, respectively.

The Bulls went down to the last court in doubles after winning 6-3 at No. 1 but dropped court two in a 6-2 decision. At the No. 3 spot senior Vadym Kayluzhnyy and freshman Jakub Wojcik saved three match points to clinch the doubles point.

Quotable:

Head Coach Ashley Fisher on the team's performance…

"Another great team effort across the board with every court fighting and supporting each other. SMU is a well-coached team who beat us at home last year, so to get the win today was very satisfying. Our guys are rounding into some good form which bodes well for the next month of conference play."

Up Next:

The Bulls will enjoy a week off before welcoming conference opponent Tulane to the USF Varsity Tennis Courts March 30 at 1 p.m.
