No. 5 Seed USF Heads To No. 4 Seed Memphis For First Round of AAC Championship

TAMPA, Fla. (November 4, 2023) – Fifth-seeded South Florida men's soccer (6-8-1) heads to Tennessee for a pairing with fourth-seed Memphis (9-4-2) in the first round of the 2023 AAC Men's Soccer Championship on Sunday night. Start time is set for 8:00 p.m. ET and the game can be streamed live on ESPN+.
 
SETTING THE STAGE
South Florida has made it to the AAC Championship field for the 8th time in program history. Jalen Anderson leads the Bulls with 7 goals on the season, accompanied by Ajmeer Spengler, who has six assists. Memphis enters AAC Championship play off a 1-0 loss at Charlotte (Nov. 1).
 
SOUTH FLORIDA-MEMPHIS SERIES
USF has won 18 of 29 all-time meetings against Memphis, which extends back to the 1984 season. The Bulls are looking to win their seventh contest in Memphis territory. In the last meeting, South Florida Fell, 2-1 in Memphis, Tenn. (Oct. 27).
 
LAST TIME OUT
USF shutout FAU, 2-0 on senior night (Nov. 1). The Bulls found the net early, as Ajmeer Spengler scored just 11 minutes into the match. Spengler was assisted by Brian Schaefer before finding a sneaky shot into the back corner of the goalposts. South Florida continued to create chances in the second half, where it took 10-of-16 total attempts on the night. With nine minutes to play the yellow cards went flying, giving Jalen Anderson a penalty kick opportunity. Anderson took his shot, sending FAU's goalkeeper in the opposite direction, which put USF up 2-0.

SCOUTING THE TIGERS
Lineker Rodrigues dos Santos leads Memphis with 12 goals on the year. Hayden Anderson boasts six assists on the year.
 
USF ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME
Alumni Jeff Attinella has been selected as a member of the 2023 USF Athletics Hall of Fame Class and will be inducted on Thurs., Nov. 9. Attinella is one of two student-athletes to receive that honor in USF men's soccer history. An NSCAA First-Team All-American goalkeeper (2009), a three-time All-Region selection, and three-time Big East All-Conference honoree, earning first-team honors in both in 2009, Attinella played on four NCAA Tournament Teams and helped lead the 2007 team to the NCAA Sweet 16 and the 2008 team to the NCAA Elite Eight.

USF Men's Soccer competed in the school's first-ever intercollegiate athletic contest on Sept. 25, 1965, beating Florida Southern 4-3.
