Tampa, Fla. (Feb. 17, 2023) – The University of South Florida women's tennis team dropped their first of two games in Texas, falling to SMU 4-0.
In doubles, the Bulls weren't able to find their rhythm, falling 6-1 on court one and then 6-0 on court two. Before the doubles point was decided, USF's
Laura Pellicer and
Ireland Simme were making a push on court three, trailing only 3-4 at the time that the court was called.
SMU carried the momentum with them into singles, not allowing USF to claim any of the first sets.
In the second sets, USF showed some fight, falling on courts three and four but competing in close contests on all of the remaining four courts.
Berry had a 5-4 lead on court one and looked poised to force a third set to try and extend her undefeated season singles record. An SMU point on court six, however, decided the match, forcing her to settle for a DNF.
Simme gave all she had on court six, bouncing back from a 0-6 loss in the first set to finding herself in the midst of a 5-5 game in the second set. SMU's Lana Mavor ultimately proved to be just too much handle on that day, as Simme fell 5-7.
