Bulls drop midweek opener to Dartmouth

Freshman Rafael Betancourt went 3-for-4 in his first start of the season on Tuesday.

TAMPA (March 14, 2023) – The University of South Florida Bulls (5-12) opened a two-game series on Tuesday night with a 6-1 loss to Dartmouth College (1-7).

After being named the AAC Pitcher of the Week on Monday, southpaw Nolan Hudi (Safety Harbor) made the start for South Florida on Tuesday. Hudi allowed just one run and struck out a career-high 10 batters against Pitt last Tuesday without issuing a walk. Hudi (1-2) suffered the loss against Dartmouth, allowing five runs on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts over 4.0 IP.

The Bulls' lone run of the ballgame came on a sacrifice fly by Drew Brutcher (Lakeland) in the third inning after the Big Green had taken a 3-0 lead in the top of the frame.

Trailing 5-1 in the sixth inning, USF loaded the bases with only one out but an inning-ending double play got Dartmouth out of the jam. The Bulls stranded 10 runners on base in the setback.

Freshman Rafael Betancourt (Deltona) made his first start of the season and went 3-for-4 in his collegiate debut.

Notable

  • Tanner Mink (Palm Harbor) tossed three scoreless innings in relief with three strikeouts. Mink has allowed just one run and struck out 11 over his last four appearances (8.1 IP).
  • Brutcher has reached base safely in 13 straight games.
