Memphis rallies for 7-6 win over USF

Jack Cebert struck out seven and allowed just one run over 7.0 IP on Saturday evening.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (May 6, 2023) – The University of Memphis Tigers (25-22, 7-10 AAC) overcame a pair of three-run deficits on Saturday and walked-off with a 7-6 victory over the University of South Florida Bulls (18-30, 6-11 AAC) after plating four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning in the second matchup of a three-game weekend series.

Drew Brutcher (Lakeland) connected on his 30th career home run at South Florida to claim sole possession of seventh place all-time in program history.

Bobby Boser (Wesley Chapel) blasted a go-ahead three-run homer for the Bulls in the top of the ninth after Memphis plated a pair of runs to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth, only to see the Tigers hang a crooked number in the bottom of the ninth for the win.

USF led 3-0 after four innings on Saturday afternoon with its sights set on evening the weekend series. Brutcher homered in the first inning, Rafael Betancourt (Deltona) drove in a run in the third frame and Nelson Rivera (Toa Alto, Puerto Rico) tallied a solo home run in the fourth inning.

Jack Cebert (Tampa) turned in a quality start on the mound for the Bulls with seven innings of four-hit ball. The right-hander allowed one run, walked two batters and struck out seven in the no-decision.

The Tigers did their damage against closer Riley Skeen (Pompano Beach) who surrendered six runs on six hits over 1.1 IP. Memphis' final run of the game crossed the plate on a wild pitch after Tanner Mink (Palm Harbor) relieved Skeen.

Memphis tallied its lone run against Cebert in the bottom of the sixth inning and tied the game with two runs off Skeen in the bottom of the eighth. After Boser's three-run blast, Skeen went back to the hill with another save opportunity, but could not record the final three outs of the ballgame.

Notable

  • Boser leads USF with 14 home runs this season, the most by a Bull since Joe Genord (16) in 2018.
  • Boser has hit 11 home runs over his last 21 games. He is batting .393 with 14 extra-base hits, eight home runs and 21 RBI over 17 AAC games this season.
