South Florida Men’s Soccer Adds Luis Vega As Assistant Coach

TAMPA (July 31st, 2023) – The University of South Florida's men's soccer head coach Bob Butehorn announced the hiring of Luis Vega as an assistant coach on Monday. Vega joins the Bulls after serving as an assistant and recruiting coordinator at Georgia Southern University from January 2021 to December 2022.
 
"I'm really pleased that we are able to add Luis to our staff," said head coach Butehorn. "He is a great complement to our group, both as a coach and mentor to our players. He has a bright future in this business."
 
Vega's duties will encompass operations, coaching, recruiting, as well as team analytics for the men's soccer program.
 
"I would like to thank Coach Butehorn for this amazing opportunity," said assistant coach Vega. "I am grateful to be a part of the USF family and the men's soccer program. I'm looking forward to the upcoming season and working with the staff and the student-athletes while representing this amazing institution. The South Florida men's soccer program has a history of winning and I am excited to see what the upcoming season has in store."
 
Prior to Vega's stint at Georgia Southern, he spent two years at his alma mater, Florida Gulf Coast University, as a volunteer assistant coach and director of operations. From August 2018 to December of 2020, Vegas served as the head coach of the Lee County Soccer Club in Fort Myers, Fla.
 
Vega spent his playing career at FGCU (2012-15), where he made 43 starts on the backline. His defense helped the Eagles to a quartet of regular season A-Sun titles, a pair of conference tournament titles ('12, '14), and two NCAA Tournament berths.
 
The Guatemala City, Guatemala native graduated from FGCU with his bachelor's degree in environmental engineering in 2018, and his MBA in 2020.
 
Vega has also represented his home country as a member of the U-20 (2009-10) and U-17 (2007-09) Guatemala National Team.
 
The Bulls will open the 2023 campaign with three exhibition matches at Corbett Stadium, the first on Thurs., Aug. 10 vs. Southeastern. The 2023 season officially opens on Thurs., Aug. 24 when the Bulls travel to Washington. USF will play eight regular season matches at Corbett Stadium, the first on Fri., Sept. 1 vs. Mercer. The Bulls also welcome Indiana (Sept. 8), Clemson (Sept. 12), Elon (Sept. 17), SMU (Sept. 22), Charlotte (Oct. 8), UAB (Oct. 21) and FAU (Nov. 1) to Tampa.

All of South Florida's home regular season matches will once again be streamed live on the ESPN+ platform. USF Men's Soccer competed in the school's first-ever intercollegiate athletic contest on Sept. 25, 1965, beating Florida Southern 4-3. Since then, the oldest program on campus has built a winning tradition, claiming 14 conference championships and making 22 NCAA Tournament appearances, including 3 trips to the elite eight.
 
The program also has a strong reputation within the professional game and boasts 30 MLS draft picks. Notable alumni include two-time MLS Golden Boot winner Jeff Cunningham, USA 1994 World Cup star Roy Wegerle, and 2013 MLS Cup winner Dom Dwyer.
 
The Bulls have reached the NCAA Tournament 13 times over the past 21 seasons.
