Bulls Head To Miami For Meeting With Panthers

TAMPA (September 28, 2023) – The University of South Florida men's soccer (2-5, 0-1) heads to the 305 for a clash with Florida International University (4-2-2, 2-0) on Friday, Sept. 29. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. and the match will air on ESPN+.  
 
SETTING THE STAGE
The Bulls have won two of their last four matches. Jalen Anderson leads USF with 3 goals on the year and Ajmeer Spengler has a team-best four assists. FIU enters on a two-game hot streak and is undefeated in league play. In their last match, the Panthers beat Memphis, 2-1.
 
SOUTH FLORIDA-FIU SERIES
USF is 13-15-5 in the all-time pairings with FIU, which extends back to the 1974 season. The Bulls are looking for their sixth away win against the Panthers, the last win at FIU Soccer Stadium was a 1-0 victory on Aug. 25, 2006. In the last clash, USF fell to FIU, 2-0 on Nov. 23, 2022.
 
LAST TIME OUT
South Florida fell to SMU, 2-1, on Friday (Sept. 22) in conference opening action. In the 58th minute, the Bulls' Brian Schaefer netted the equalizer off of a corner from Ajmeer Spengler. Schaefers first goal of the season tied the match, 1-1, before SMU pulled ahead exactly one minute later.

SCOUTING THE PANTHERS
Eduardo Mustre is FIU's leading scorer with five goals, and has one of the teams four game-winners. Bernardo Dos Santos Monteiro, Eduardo Mustre, and Owen Travis were named to the weekly American Athletic Conference honor roll list after their recent win over Memphis.
 
A LOOK AHEAD
South Florida heads to Oklahoma for a meeting with Tulsa on Wednesday, Oct. 4. Kickoff is slated for 8:00 p.m. and the match will air on ESPN+.
 
USF ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME
Alumni Jeff Attinella has been selected as a member of the 2023 USF Athletics Hall of Fame Class and will be inducted on Thurs., Nov. 9. Attinella is one of two student-athletes to receive that honor in USF men's soccer history. An NSCAA First-Team All-American goalkeeper (2009), a three-time All-Region selection, and three-time Big East All-Conference honoree, earning first-team honors in both in 2009, Attinella played on four NCAA Tournament Teams and helped lead the 2007 team to the NCAA Sweet 16 and the 2008 team to the NCAA Elite Eight.

USF Men's Soccer competed in the school's first-ever intercollegiate athletic contest on Sept. 25, 1965, beating Florida Southern 4-3.
