Tampa, Fla. March 16, 2024 – The University of South Florida track and field team opened up the outdoor season winning five events and setting four program records at the USF Alumni Invitational. Former USF All-Americans, Hall of Famers, and Olympians came to watch the Bulls put on a show, and they did not disappoint.
FRIDAY
Kobe Babin broke the men's pole vault program record, topping his previous height of 5.36m from last spring, by clearing 5.40m and securing the first event win of the outdoor season for the Bulls.
South Florida would make the podium in four other events on Friday. In the women's long jump,
Shaniya Benjamin placed second (6.12m) to start the day. Then
Antonia Sealy finished third in women's javelin throw (43.81m).
The 200m dash saw both the men and women take a podium spot. Zahria-Allers Liburd finished second for the women (23.41) and
Nathan Metelus took second for the men (20.59).
SATURDAY
The Bulls dominated the relay events.
Zahria Allers-Liburd,
Terren Peterson, Je'Niya Burton, and
Shaniya Benjamin led the women to win the women's 4x100m relay with the second-fastest time in school history (44.06). The men followed suit, with
Zayquan Lincoln,
Jaleel Croal,
Nathan Metelus, and Abdul Rasheed Saminu winning their 4x100m relay with the fastest time in program history (39.13).
The men would also win their 4x400m relay with a program record-setting time (3:05.80) from Metelus,
Markel Jones,
Daunte O'Banion, and
Tre'Sean Bouie. The women nearly completed the South Florida relay sweep, still grabbing second place with Allers-Liburd, Benjamin, Burton, and Peterson running the eighth fastest time in program history (3:38.02).
The Bulls picked up their other event win in the men's triple jump thanks to
Goodness Iredia (15.91m).
Michael Bourne III ran a program record 110m hurdles time (13.88).
Five other bulls saw the podium in their events,
Kendell Mosley took second in the men's high jump (2.05m), and
Mimansa Dahiya took second in the women's triple jump (12.64m).
On the track,
Jaleel Croal took third in the men's 100m dash with the program's second-fastest time (10.22). In the men's 400m, Bouie took second (46.07) and
Gabriel Moronta took third (46.55).
Outside of the podium personal bests and top-10 marks were still abundant on both days. Saturtday in the men's 400m dash, O'Banion ran a 46.78 to enter into the top-10 in program history. Friday in the women's 200m, Peterson ran a personal best (23.48) as did
Lynette Scutari (24.36). In the men's 200m dash,
Shomari Pettigrew also ran a personal best (21.45).
Saturday in the men's 100m dash,
Jermaine Dyges also ran a personal best 10.32, and Lincoln a 10.33 locking them, along with Croal, into top-five 100m dash times in program history.
Tyler Drew ran a personal best in men's 100m hurdles (14.05).

The USF track and field team has earned 56 All-America selections and at least one All-American in 10 of the last 12 years, including a record eight athletes claiming 11 honors in 2021. Romaine Beckford won the 2023 NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships in the men's high jump. Tampa native Shaniya Benjamin set a program record earning three All-American honors during the 2021 outdoor season, while triple jumper Matthew O'Neal, a 2016 graduate, became USF's first six-time NCAA All-American. Bulls have posted two NCAA runner-up finishes since 2013 - O'Neal (triple jump, 2016) and Courtney Anderson (high jump, 2013). Head coach Erik Jenkins took over the program in 2020 and in the 2021 outdoor season the Bulls posted seven program records and 40 top 10 all-time program marks. The Bulls men's team won the 2024 AAC Conference Championship. USF hosted the 2018 NCAA Track and Field East Preliminary and the 2021 AAC Outdoor Championship at the USF Track and Field Stadium located on the east end of campus.
