USF Track and Field Leaves Mt. SAC Relays with a Program Record and Four Podium Finishes

Bulls took home eight new program top-10 marks; O’Banion wins men’s 400m dash open.

Tampa, Fla. April 20, 2024 – The University of South Florida track and field return to Tampa tomorrow with eight new top-10 entries to the South Florida record books, four podium winners, a 400m dash win, and a new women's program record in the 4x100m relay.
 
The men's team entered the meet ranked sixth in the nation, with five top-ten marks, while the women's team entered with four top-25 marks. Both improved upon those marks.

FRIDAY
Noah Bitter was the first Bull to podium at the Mt. SAC Relays. Bitter cleared 5.00m (16' - 4.75") Friday morning to earn second place in the men's pole vault open.
 
Daunte O'Banion then took home the first win for the Bulls, winning the men's 400m dash open with the fourth-fastest time (46.29) in program history. Nathan Metelus also set the ninth-fastest time in program history (47.25).
 
Zahria Allers-Liburd finished the women's 200m dash open in 23.57 seconds, to earn third place.
 
In the women's 800m, Amenda Saint Louis ran the fourth-fastest time in program history (2:08.30), setting her personal best by over three seconds and finishing fourth place.
 
SATURDAY
Zahria Allers-Liburd, Terren Peterson, Je'Nyia Burton, and Shaniya Benjamin ran a program record (43.93) in the women's elite 4x100m relay on Saturday to start off the action.
 
Zayquan Lincoln, Jaleel Croal, Shevioe Reid, and Nathan Metelus finished third in the men's elite 4x100m relay with the second-fastest time in program history (39.33).
 
Markel Jones ran the second-fastest 110m hurdles in men's program history (13.84) to finish seventh in the men's elite section.
 
Jaleel Croal matched the 19th-best time in the Division I NCAA during the men's 100m dash elite section (10.16). This time was the second fastest in men's program history and placed Croal seventh in the event.
 
Shaniya Benjamin finished fourth in the women's long jump elite section with a jump of 6.34m (20' - 9.75").
 
Croal finished fifth in the men's 200m dash elite with a time of 21.07 Saturday afternoon two hours after his 100m dash participation.
 
Goodness Iredia came into the men's triple jump elite with the seventh-best jump in the nation (15.91m) and topped it at 15.93m (52' - 3.25"). Iredia finished fifth and this distance ranks third best in program history.
 
Daunte O'Banion, Tre'Sean Bouie, Shevioe Reid, and Gabriel Moronta finished second in the 4x400m relay elite, with the second fastest in men's program history (3:03.60).
 
UP NEXT
The sprinters and hurdlers will fly up to Philadelphia, Pa. for the Penn Relays on April 25-27, while the jump and throw athletes will be at the University of North Florida on the same dates for a separate meet.

The USF track and field men's team won the 2024 Indoor AAC Championship. Romaine Beckford won the 2023 NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships in the men's high jump as a Bull. The team has earned 56 All-America selections and at least one All-American in 10 of the last 12 years, including a record eight athletes claiming 11 honors in 2021. Tampa native Shaniya Benjamin set a program record earning three All-American honors during the 2021 outdoor season, while triple jumper Matthew O'Neal, a 2016 graduate, became USF's first six-time NCAA All-American. Bulls have posted two NCAA runner-up finishes since 2013 - O'Neal (triple jump, 2016) and Courtney Anderson (high jump, 2013). Head coach Erik Jenkins took over the program in 2020 and in the 2021 outdoor season the Bulls posted seven program records and 40 top 10 all-time program marks. USF hosted the 2018 NCAA Track and Field East Preliminary and the 2021 AAC Outdoor Championship at the USF Track and Field Stadium located on the east end of campus.
