Bulls set 30th program record of 2024 and take home three Penn Relay Championships in split-meet weekend

Tampa, Fla. April 27, 2024 – The University of South Florida track and field returns home from Philadelphia, Pa. with three of the prestigious Penn Relays Championship of America Wheels.
 
"This was a historic weekend for the University of South Florida at the prestigious Penn Relays," Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Erik Jenkins said. "Our student-athletes represented USF well against the nation's and world's best. In addition, we had several quality performances at the East Coast Relays in Jacksonville."

PENN RELAYS
The Bulls pulled off the 4x200m relay sweep on Friday to earn their first two Penn Relay Championship of America Wheels.
 
Just two hours after running a qualifying time (44.68) for the 4x100m final, Zahria Allers-Liburd, Terren Peterson, Shaniya Benjamin, and Je'Nyia Burton ran a 1:33.19 to win the Penn Relays 4x200m Championship of America for the second consecutive year.
 
Then the men followed and did their part. Abdul-Rasheed Saminu, Shevioe Reid, Jaleel Croal, and Nathan Metelus ran a 1:22.08 in the 4x200m relay championship for their first men's Penn Relay Championship of America wheel in program history.
 
Zayquan Lincoln, Croal, Reid, and Saminu also matched the women in qualifying for their 4x100m relay final. The men ran the fastest qualifying time of any 4x100m heats (39.41) and advanced to the Championship of America Final Saturday.
 
Tre'Sean Bouie, Devontie Archer, Gabriel Moronta, and Markel Jones. They ran the third-fastest qualifying time (3:05.32) to advance to the 4x400m Championship of America Final Saturday. The time was also the third fastest in program history.
 
Saturday, the men collected South Florida's third Championship of America Wheel, edging out Houston by a hundredth of a second (39.34) in the 4x100m final. The time was the third-fastest in program history.
 
The women competed in the 4x100m Championship of America Final and finished seventh with a time of 44.84.
 
Bouie, Reid, Archer, and Moronta, ran the second-fastest 4x400m relay time in program history (3:02.43) to finish third in the 4x400m Championship of America Final.
 
South Florida had one other podium finish at the meet. On Thursday, Jones took third place in the men's 400m hurdles championship with a 51.28 time.

EAST COAST RELAYS
The team sent their sprinters and hurdlers to compete in the Penn Relays, but the rest of the roster traveled to Jacksonville, Fla. for the East Coast Relays.
 
The Bulls who traveled to the University of North Florida rivaled their teammate's Philadelphia success, setting South Florida's 29th and 30th program records of the year.
 
Goodness Iredia kept up his late-season momentum, setting the program record in men's long jump (7.94m / 26' - 0.75") to take first place. This was the eighth-longest jump in Division I NCAA this season.
 
Vincent Ugwoke took second place in the men's discus throw with a program record (61.44m / 201' - 7.00"), just eight inches behind first place. This was the eighth-longest throw in Division I NCAA this season.
 
This record was also South Florida's 30th program record for the 2024 indoor and outdoor season.
 
Jermaine Dyges ran in the men's 200m dash and ran the ninth-fastest time in program history (21.04).
 
Darian Mills took second place in the men's 400m hurdles competition (51.48). The Bulls had three finishers in the top-10 with Tyler Drew in fourth and Joshua Crum in ninth.
 
Madeline Dutz cleared the eighth-highest height in program history in the women's pole vault (3.90m / 12' - 9.50").

With spring football practice over, JeyQuan Smith returned to the track and ran a 10.52 in the 100m dash.

UP NEXT
The regular season is over and after a week off, the Bulls will have all hands on-deck for the AAC Outdoor Championship May 10-12 in San Antonio, Texas.

The USF track and field men's team won the 2024 Indoor AAC Championship. Romaine Beckford won the 2023 NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships in the men's high jump as a Bull. The team has earned 56 All-America selections and at least one All-American in 10 of the last 12 years, including a record eight athletes claiming 11 honors in 2021. Tampa native Shaniya Benjamin set a program record earning three All-American honors during the 2021 outdoor season, while triple jumper Matthew O'Neal, a 2016 graduate, became USF's first six-time NCAA All-American. Bulls have posted two NCAA runner-up finishes since 2013 - O'Neal (triple jump, 2016) and Courtney Anderson (high jump, 2013). Head coach Erik Jenkins took over the program in 2020 and in the 2021 outdoor season the Bulls posted seven program records and 40 top 10 all-time program marks. USF hosted the 2018 NCAA Track and Field East Preliminary and the 2021 AAC Outdoor Championship at the USF Track and Field Stadium located on the east end of campus.
