BULLS SPLIT THE WEEKEND 2-1

Hugo Car upsets No. 11 Lui Maxted

TAMPA, FLA. (March 4, 2025)- The University of South Florida Bulls (9-3) wrapped up the weekend with a 2-1 record. The Bulls took wins over No. 59 University of Pacific (5-5) and No. 54 Oregon (8-4), while losing to No. 2 TCU (11-2). This trio of matches ended a seven-game long away streak for the Bulls who will return to home court play on Thursday, March 6.

The Bulls faced off to University of Pacific on Friday in Stockton, California. The Bulls lost the doubles point early, but responded aggressively in singles play. On Court 1, Hugo Car took a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 win. Agustin Cuellar added another victory on Court 2 with a score of. 6-3, 6-7, 7-6. Elijah Cham added some cushion with a swift 6-1, 6-2 win on Court 3. Court 4 ended with another quick 6-3, 6-1 win produced by Gughi Verdese. Finally, Toto Llanes wrapped the match up with a 7-5, 6-1 win on Court 6.

The Bulls continued the next day in California to play Oregon. After dropping the doubles point, they responded with similar intensity in singles play as the day before. Car took another win on Court 1 with a score of 2-6, 6-1, 6-1. Verdese added a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 win on Court 4. Stepan Mruzek earned a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory on court 5. While a swift win on Court 6 of 6-2, 6-3 by Llanes wrapped up the match and left the other courts unfinished.

The Bulls wrapped up their weekend play by traveling to Fort Worth, Texas to face off against TCU. While the Bulls dropped most courts against the No. 2 ranked team, Car delivered a huge win for the Bulls on Court 1. Car fought for a 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 win against the No. 11 ranked player in the nation. This win, amongst many others, earned Car as the AAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week.

The Bulls are ending their away road match streak with a doubleheader in Tampa, Fla. on Thursday, March 6. South Florida will face University of North Carolina Wilmington (3-5) in the morning, followed by a match against Furman (5-6) in the afternoon. The Bulls are 7-3 in match-up history against UNCW with their last matchup resulting in a close win of 4-3 by the Bulls in 2023. The Bulls are 3-0 against Furman, facing off for the last time back in 2022.
