TAMPA (March 4, 2025)- The University of South Florida's
Hugo Car has been named the American Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Player of the week, the league announced on Tuesday.
South Florida traveled to Stockton, California to face University of Pacific (5-5) and Oregon (8-4), before heading to Fort Worth, Texas to face TCU (11-2). The Bulls came up ahead with a score of 2-1 on the weekend pushing them to a 9-3 record.
Car arguably earned his biggest win this weekend facing off against No. 2 TCU on Monday. Car, on Court 1, earned the Bulls a huge point by defeating No. 11 Lui Maxted with a score of 4-6, 7-5, 6-4. Additionally, Car added two more single's wins on Friday and Saturday, both on Court 1. Against No. 65 University of Pacific, Car won with a score of 6-4, 3-6, 7-6. Car followed this with a win of 2-6, 6-1, 6-1against No. 51 Oregon.
Although this is Car's first year in Division 1, he ranked up awards during his time in JUCO. He was ranked the No. 1 JUCO player in the country in 2024 and won the 2024 JUCO National Championship for singles, as well as being a two-twin First-Team All-American. During Car's time at South Florida, he has strictly played on Court 1 for singles play and has given the team many decisive points. He is 8-1 on the season in singles and is on a eight-game win streak. Car has earned his first Division 1 ITA ranking in the past week coming in at No. 84 in the nation.
The Bulls have a double-header on Wednesday, March 5 at home. This is the first time USF will be playing at home in seven straight matches. South Florida will be facing University of North Carolina Wilmington (3-5), followed by Furman (5-6).

Head coach Ashley Fisher is in his ninth year at the helm of the program for the 2022-23 season. Fischer has guided the Bulls to four NCAA Tournaments, including three trips to the second round. He was named the American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 2017 & 2019 after leading USF to the conference title in each of those seasons.
