TAMPA, Fla. (Feb. 19, 2006) ? The University of South Florida softball team posted its second-straight shutout of the day, defeating Florida A&M, 7-0, in day two of the Wilson Invitational at the USF Softball Field.
Bree Spence (2-0) led the way in the circle, stifling batters in her first shutout of the season. The sophomore only dished out three hits in seven innings of work, while striking out six batters. The Clearwater, Fla., native allowed no walks in the game.
“We had pretty good pitching and pretty good defense, so when you get those types of things you have a pretty good chance to win,” coach Ken Eriksen said.
USF (5-4) got its bats going early in the game, taking advantage of bases loaded in the top of the first. With one out, Krista Holle hit an RBI-single through the left side, scoring Kattrina Dowd from third, 1-0. With the bases still loaded, FAMU pitcher Destiny Gordon walked home a run to give USF a 2-0 lead.
The Bulls added three more runs on the board in the second and third inning, 5-0. USF took advantage of Lady Rattler misplays, scoring two runs thanks to errors in the second. In the third inning, freshman Ashley Bullion hit her first-career home run over the right-field fence to give USF the five-run lead.
In the top of the seventh the FAMU (3-5) misplays continued, and USF scored two runs off the errors, 7-0.
USF will conclude the Wilson Invitational tomorrow when it faces Jacksonville at 4 p.m. and Hofstra at 6 p.m.
