Charlottesville, VA (March 22, 2007) ? The University of South Florida women's basketball team ended its season with a heartbreaking 73-71 loss to Virginia in the third round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament Thursday night.
USF, who led by as many as eight points (22-14) with 8:43 left in the first half, let the Cavaliers (19-14) back into the contest in the second half. Virginia would take its biggest lead on the game, 48-41, with 15:30 left in the game.
The Bulls would fight back to cut the lead to one-point four times in the final stanza but could not get tie the contest or take the lead.
After UVA led by seven points, 73-66, with 1:03 left, USF's Shantia Grace (Sarasota, FL) would score the next five points on a three-point shot and two converted free throws to cut the lead to two, 73-71, with 44 seconds remaining.
The Bulls would rebound a missed Virginia trey with 16 seconds left. After the Cavaliers deflected a pass out of bounds with four seconds left, USF had a chance to tie or win the game in bounding the ball out of bounds from underneath its basket, however a Tristen Webb (Stone Mountain, GA) pass went through a wide open Nalini Miller's (Capital Heights, MD) with clock running out seconds later.
Grace would finish the game with a team-high 19 points on 7-14 shooting from the field and hit the team's only three-point shot of the night.
Miller would net 14 points and Jessica Dickson (Ocala, FL) and Rachael Sheats (Marietta, GA) chipped in with 12 and 11 points apiece.
Dickson would finish her storied USF career with 2,402 points.
