TAMPA, Fla. (March 25, 2007) ? With identical scores of 6-1, the No. 39 University of South Florida women's tennis team closed out its regular season home schedule with wins over No. 53 Dartmouth and UNF, this weekend.
With the wins, the Bulls (11-6) upped their 2007 record on the Varsity Courts to 9-2 and outscored opponents 58-10 at home.
Saturday's action featured USF claiming two of the three doubles points from No. 53 Dartmouth (8-3), and then rolling on to win five of the six singles flights.
Freshman Jessica Sweeting broke out of a three-match losing streak as she defeated The Big Green's Mary Beth Winingham 6-4, 7-5 at the No. 2 spot.
Sophomore Ashley Schumacher was brought into the lineup for the first time as a Bull, seeing action on both the singles and doubles courts. The Orlando native and transfer from Kennesaw State fell with partner Courtney Vernon in the No. 3 doubles match, 8-6 and also to Carley Markovitz in straight sets at the No. 6 singles spot.
Sunday's play saw USF dispatch UNF in very similar fashion, taking two of three doubles matches and five of six singles.
No. 42 Vernon continued to play outstanding tennis, as she earned her ninth victory of the season from the first position and won her 10th match out of the last 11 played.
USF will conclude the regular season next weekend with a road trip to Boca Raton and Miami, to battle Florida Atlantic on Sat., April 14 and No. 29 Florida International on Sun., April 15.
The team will play host to the 2007 BIG EAST Championships, April 19-22.
