TAMPA ? The University of South Florida women's basketball team was outscored 30-17 through the first 10 minutes of the second half as Marquette turned a 34-all halftime tie into a 79-66 BIG EAST Conference win Saturday night at the Sun Dome.
The Bulls (11-8, 1-5 BIG EAST), who shot 28.8 percent (19-66) from the field for the game, committed a season-high 24 turnovers which led to 26 Golden Eagle points.
The game was close through the first half as neither team led by more than five points. Marquette took a 22-17 lead with 8:32 left before the intermission on a jumper by Angel Robinson only to have USF go on a 14-4 run to take it's own five-point edge, 31-26, with 4:48 left on a three-point shot by Shantia Grace.
The Golden Eagles (11-8, 3-3 BIG EAST) would score eight of the final 11 points of the half to knot the score at 34-34 at the break.
Marquette would then continue its run ? a 14-5 stretch ? at the beginning of the second half to take a 48-39 lead.
The Golden Eagles would not look back as Krystal Ellis scored 23 of her 30 points in the final stanza en route to the win.
Jazmine Sepulveda led all USF players with 14 points while Grace added 13 points in the loss. Porche Grant had eight points and a team-high nine rebounds.
The Bulls will now embark on its toughest stretch of its 2007-08 schedule. USF will be back in action on Wednesday night when its faces No. 1/1 Connecticut at 7 p.m. at the XL Center (formally Hartford Civic Center) in Hartford Conn.
The Bulls will then travel to Louisville to face the Cardinals on Feb. 2 at 7p.m. before returning home to take on RV/No. 25 DePaul on Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. USF will hit the midway point of the month with games at Cincinnati (Feb. 9) and at home against No. 5/5 Rutgers (Feb. 16).
