TOA BAJA, Puerto Rico ? Puerto Rico native Jesus Verdejo tied his career high with 26 points, including 19 in the second half, but it wasn't enough as USF fell, 60-43, to Wright State Sunday at Coliseo Deportivo in Toa Baja, Puerto Rico in the second of three games in the San Juan Shootout.
The Bulls dropped to 4-6 on the year, while Wright State improved to 5-7 on the season.
USF wraps up play in Puerto Rico against Oral Roberts on Monday, Dec. 22, at 5:15 p.m. ET. The games can be heard on WHNZ 1250 AM. The Bulls defeated Murray State, 73-64, on Saturday, Dec. 20, in their first game in Puerto Rico.
Verdejo was 7-12 from the field, 5-9 from 3-point range and 7-9 from the free throw line, but no other Bull scored more than four points as shooting woes plagued USF throughout the game. USF shot just 26.5 percent from the field, missing a number of open looks on the night.
The USF defense kept it in the game in the first half, as they held Wright State to 29.6 percent shooting in the first stanza. The Bulls trailed 21-14 at the break. WSU finished the game shooting 41.7 percent from the field and just 11.8 percent from 3-point range.
USF's leading scorer coming into the game, Dominique Jones, was held scoreless for the first time in his collegiate career.
Senior forward Mobolaji Ajayi led USF with a game-high nine rebounds, while Jones had a game-high four assists.
Postgame Notes
Senior guard Jesus Verdejo tallied 26 points vs. Wright State, matching his career high from earlier this season on Dec. 3 at UAB.
Jesus Verdejo's 26 points against Wright State gives him 639 for his career, moving him into 50th on the all-time USF scoring list.
With three assists, Chris Howard now has 267 career assists, just one out of 11th place on the all-time USF assist list.
