, Fla. - Capri Catalano's eight strikeouts against Florida Gulf Coast would not be enough for the Bulls as the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles downed USF, 2-0, in game two of the USF Best Western Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
Catalano took over for sophomore Kristen Gordon early in the first inning with two runners on base and struck out Desiree Miller to end the inning and keep the Eagles from scoring.
Three of Catalano's eight strikeouts came at the bottom of the third inning and led the Bulls, who where the designated visiting team, into a rally in the fourth inning. Kit Dunbar and JoJo Medina led off the fourth with two singles, but the rest of the lineup could not capatalize on the early offense.
The story line was similar in the first inning when junior Britta Giddens opened the game and USF was threatened early, but couldn't push across a run. USF left a total of six runner on base.
Junior pitcher Cristi Ecks came in and relieved Catalano in the sixth inning. After playing the hero in relief against Tennessee, Ecks would be saddled with the loss against FGCU after giving up two runs in the Eagles final at bat.
USF, which dropped a game against FGCU last weekend, had five hits to the Eagles two hits. Senior Kit Dunbar was the only player in the game two collect two hits. The three hole hitter was 2-for-3 on the game.
The Bulls (6-3) will return to the USF Softball Stadium to take on Hofstra at 4 p.m. on Monday in the final game of the 2008 USF Best Western Tournament.
