TUCSON ? The University of South Florida softball team dropped a 12-0 five-inning decision to the No. 8/10 Arizona Wildcats Friday afternoon at Hillenbrand Stadium.
The loss marks the first time the Bulls (8-6) have been on the losing end of a run-rule game. The Wildcats (7-4) combined for a five-inning no-hitter with senior pitcher Taryne Mowatt leading the way with 11 strikeouts over four innings of work.
USF senior Courtney Mosch (5-3) picked up the loss for the Bulls. She gave up seven earned in 2.2 innings pitched.
On the offensive side, the Bulls struggled to get into any rhythm. With one out in the top of the fourth, sophomore Tara Toscano broke up the perfect game after reaching on a walk from Mowatt. Toscano then successfully stole second base for her sixth stolen base on the year in as many attempts.
The Bulls will return to action at 10 p.m. EST when they play the Iowa State Cyclones for their second game of the Hillenbrand Invitational. USF won the last meeting with the Cyclones, 2-1, on Match 18, 1994.
