Gainesville, Fla. ? The No. 57 University of South Florida men's tennis team nearly pulled out an impressive victory against the No. 19-ranked University of Florida Gators, Friday afternoon at the Ring Tennis Complex, in Gainesville, Fla. The Gators came away with a 4-3 victory.
To start the match, the Bulls (1-2) couldn't muster any momentum in doubles competition, dropped all three matches to the Gators.
After the short intermission, the Bulls came stampeding back in singles competition. USF freshman Lucas Jovita was second off the court with his straight set victory over 57-ranked Alex Lacroix, 6-3, 6-4. Jamaal Adderley wasn't far behind, defeating 62-ranked Nester Briceno, 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 to pick up the victory at the third singles position. This marked the second time this season that both Jovita and Adderley defeated a ranked opponent in the same match.
The Gators proved to be too much for the Bulls, picking up wins at the No. 1, 4 and 6 spots, to take the match.
Michael Nusslein picked up USF's third victory at the No. 5 spot, defeating Tyler Hochwalt in three sets, 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4.
The Bulls will return home on Sunday, Feb. 10 when they face the Jacksonville Dolphins at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
