CINCINNATI, Ohio - University of South Florida senior Joey Angelberger sent the second pitch of the game over the right field wall, propelling the Bulls to a 14-10 victory Friday night in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Angelberger was one of seven Bulls to record a hit in the game, USF's third BIG EAST victory of the year. USF improves to 11-8 on the season.
Freshman Kyle Eastham earned his first win of the season, striking out four of his 21 batters faced. Eastham allowed three earned runs from six hits and walked two in his fifth appearance. Freshman Zach Pietrzyk earned his first-career save, striking out one in 2.1 innings.
After Angelberger's solo shot in the first, the Bulls scored five in the second inning, then added eight more over the next four innings to take the 14-9 lead after six. USF held UC to just one more run which was scored in the seventh.
Six Bulls had multiple-hit outings in USF's first road win of the year. Along with his home run, Angelberger also had a double, while junior Chris Rey tagged a leadoff home run in the fourth, his fourth bomb of the season. Juniors Addison Maruszak and Brandon Smith, and freshmen Ryan Lockwood and Jon Koscso, each had a pair of singles.
Lockwood tallied his 10th multiple-hit game of the season and Maruszak picked up his eighth. Koscso extended his hitting streak to four games, the most on the team.
Smith started the second inning's rush of runs with a single to left field, then with two outs, Rey sent a base hit up the middle to put Smith in scoring position. Walks dealt to Koscso and Maruszak, and an error by the Bearcats, led to five runs in the inning.
Rey's solo home run, along with singles from Koscso, Maruszak and Lockwood led to three runs scored in the fourth, and with two outs, Angelberger tagged a double to pick up a pair of RBI in the fifth.
The Bulls scored three more in the sixth as Smith and designated hitter Eric Baumann drew walks and Koscso was hit by a pitch, all scoring runs in the inning. Maruszak earned his 13th RBI of the season in the inning, picking up two on a single to the left side.
USF and Cincinnati take the field again Saturday at 1 p.m., the start of the Bulls' third double header of the season. Freshman Randy Fontanez is expected to start the first game and sophomore Matt Quevedo will get the nod in the second game.
