TAMPA, Fla. - Freshman right hander Derrick Stultz pitched eight innings to lead the University of South Florida baseball team to an 8-4 victory over Louisville Sunday afternoon in Tampa.
Stultz earned the third win of his rookie career, striking out four and allowing one earned run from eight hits in his eight innings of work.
"Stultz has been good for us the last couple of outings, he stays ahead of the hitters," said head coach Lelo Prado. "Like I've said all along, he's going to be a great player here."
The Bulls improve to 16-18 overall and 6-9 in the BIG EAST Conference after the 1-2 weekend with the Cardinals.
Eight Bulls had hits in the Sunday afternoon game, led by a 3-for-4 outing from freshman Jonathan Koscso, who tagged a double and a pair of singles. Along with Koscso, four other USF players connected for doubles, including Addison Maruszak, Joey Angelberger, Chris Rey and Trey Manz.
"Today we came out with good intensity and we got after it a little bit," added Prado. "The hitters were here and ready to go. When that happens, good things happen at the end."
Louisville got on the board first for the third-consecutive game, scoring one in the second inning, but USF answered with three in the bottom of the frame to take the two-run lead. Louisville added two in the third, but the Bulls collected five runs over the next six innings to again go ahead of the Cardinals. Louisville scored one run from two hits in the ninth, but USF was able to hold off the Cardinals to get the 8-4 win.
USF's three-run second inning started with a pair of drawn walks by Brian Hobbs and Rey, then three consecutive base hits and a sac fly to left field gave USF the lead.
In the fourth, Manz doubled down the left line then scored after a sac from Brandon Smith. An inning later, Rey doubled, and scored on a two-bagger from Koscso.
USF's seventh saw a fielder's choice sandwiched by a pair of hits on either side to score a run, and in the eighth, Angelberger doubled down the left line and scored when Hobbs singled up the middle, giving USF the 8-3 lead.
Sophomore closer Shawn Sanford faced one batter in the ninth to earn his sixth save of the season, forcing the Cardinals to ground out to end the game.
The Bulls now face a stretch of six games on the road, beginning with midweek games at Stetson and Bethune-Cookman before heading to Rutgers for the weekend. The following Tuesday, USF travels to FAU before returning to Red McEwen on April 23 to face Stetson.
