TAMPA, Fla. - The University of South Florida women's basketball team dropped its third BIG EAST Conference game in it's last four outings with an 86-68 setback to Georgetown Saturday at the Sun Dome. The loss drops USF to 15-6 on the year and 2-5 in BIG EAST play. Georgetown improves to 13-6 overall and 3-3 in league action.
The Bulls, who were coming off a big conference win, last Tuesday at Providence had considerable momentum coming into tonight's contest against the Hoyas. The Bulls, however, couldn't take advantage after they held an 8-6 lead with 13:38 left in the first half.
Georgetown would step up it's game a notch using a 30-13 run following USF's slight advantage through the 4:32 mark of the first half when Karee Houlette gave Georgetown its biggest lead of the first stanza, 36-21.
The Bulls, however, regrouped and used their own run, outscoring the Hoyas 17-5 through the remainder of the first half, cutting the lead to seven at the intermission, 38-31.
After holding USF to just 29.7 percent shooting in the first half ? including 21.1 percent from behind the three-point arc ? and hitting 51.7 percent of its shots in the first 20 minutes, Georgetown came out in the second half and took control once again.
The Hoyas opened the first 3:28 on a 17-6 run to take their biggest lead of the game, 55-35, with 16:22 left in the contest.
The Bulls cut the spread to nine, 71-62, with 3:48 left, but were unable to get any closer.
Janae Stokes led the way for USF with 14 points and Jessica Lawson, Shantia Grace and Jazmine Sepulveda each added 13 points apiece in the loss.
Jaleesa Butler, who averaged just nine points per game coming into Saturday's contest, poured in a game-high 26 points in the win.
For the game, the Bulls shot 29.4 percent from the field and 18.9 percent from three-point range while Georgetown hit an impressive 58.9 percent from the floor on the night, including 66.7 percent in the second half.
USF was dominated in the paint being outscored 50-18 and in bench points with the Hoyas holding a 25-7 advantage.
The Bulls will get a well deserved bye week as they prepare for Rutgers on Saturday, Jan. 31 at 2 p.m. The game will be televised live on Bright House Sports Network as part of the BIG EAST Conference Game of the Week package.
