TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - A penalty kick by Florida State's Toni Pressly in the 60th minute was the difference as the University of South Florida women's soccer team's (14-6-3) season came to an end with a 2-1 loss to the Seminoles Sunday afternoon at the Seminole Soccer Complex in Tallahassee.
""We had our opportunities and unfortunately they didn't go in today," said head coach Denise Schilte-Brown. "I'm proud of this team. It's a young team. It's going to be very hard to replace Angelique Waller, in fact we won't at left back. Other than that, it's a young team and we're going to grow from here so I think you can expect some exciting things from USF in the future."
After winning its first-ever NCAA Tournament match and reaching the BIG EAST Championship final, the loss ends the most successful season in program history. With 14 wins overall, the Bulls came up one victory shy of the school's single-season win total of 15.
Florida State struck first in the 24th minute off a corner kick. Sophomore Taina Brockway's corner found freshman Kassey Kallman inside the box. Kallman turned and fired a shot that found its way through a slew of Bulls defenders and past junior goalkeeper Nicole McClure.
USF would trail until late in the first half, when the Bulls made good on their lone shot on goal in the half.
After a hand ball was called on Florida State 45 yards from goal, junior Molly Stack sent the free-kick into the box, which was challenged by players from both sides. Following the challenge, the ball caromed to freshman Sharla Passariello, who sent a low liner from 21 yards out that avoided a sliding effort from freshman Florida State keeper Kelsey Wys with just 15 seconds remaining in the half. The goal was Passariello's third of the season and second in as many matches.
With momentum in their corner entering the half, the Bulls came out more aggressive to begin the second period, possessing the ball much better.
USF nearly took a 2-1 advantage just minutes into the second period as sophomore Taylor Patterson, streaking down the right side, sent a looping shot from 20 yards away that ricocheted off the far post and was then cleared by Florida State.
In the 59th minute, Florida State would tally the game winner as junior defender Toni Pressely sent home a penalty kick to give the Seminoles a 2-1 advantage following a foul called on defender Angelique Waller in the box.
The Seminoles would go on to weather any charge mounted by the Bulls attack. Patterson almost equalized the match in the 74th minute but her shot from just outside the box on net was deflected by an FSU defender.
For the match, USF was outshot, 12-5.
Junior goalkeeper Nicole McClure made four saves in the match, pushing her season total to 93. McClure finished the season with an impressive 0.89 goals against average.
