TAMPA- The University of South Florida men's tennis team competed against the University of Texas-San Antonio on Sunday at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts. The match was scheduled to take place on Friday, but due to the weather the match was rescheduled for Sunday.
The day started out with doubles competition at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts. Senior Thomas Estrada and freshman Peter Frank got things rolling for USF in their flight one doubles match against Martin Ayala and Pedro Zanotelli. Estrada and Frank downed Ayala and Zanotelli 8-3.
Sophomore Wael Kilani and junior Romain Deridder kept the momentum going for the Bulls in their flight two doubles match against Tyler Brown and Max Stratmann. This was a back fourth match between the two doubles teams with both teams battling hard for the win. It was Kilani and Deridder who would walk away with the 8-5 win, though, which earned USF their first point of the day and a 1-0 advantage heading into singles matches.
Sophomore Mark Oljaca and junior Jamal Adderley also competed in doubles competition for the Bulls in their flight three doubles match against Rodrigo Morgado and Daniel Moreiras. Both teams kept things close throughout the entire match. In the end, though, Oljaca and Adderley would fall to Morgado and Moreiras 8-6.
Adderley started out singles competition for USF with a win. Adderley took on Morgado in the flight one singles spot and he beat Morgado in two sets 6-1, 6-1 which gave the Bulls their second point of the day.
Deridder picked up the Bulls third point of the day in his flight five singles match against Delgado. Deridder downed Delgado 6-1, 6-2.
Kilani took on Brown in the flight two singles spot on Sunday. Kilani rolled past Brown 6-2, 6-2. That gave the Bulls the forth and final point they needed to pick up the win over the Roadrunners.
Oljaca competed in singles action for the Bulls on Sunday in the flight four singles spot against Stratmann. Oljaca swept past Stratmann in twos sets 6-4, 6-2.
Frank picked up the Bulls fifth singles win of the day in his flight three singles match against Ayala. Frank lost the first set to Ayala 6-4 but came back in the second set and won it 6-3 which sent the match into a tiebreaker set. Frank downed Ayala in the tiebreaker set 10-3.
Freshman Juan Carlos Acuna Gerard closed out singles competition for USF on Sunday in his flight six singles match against Moreiras. This was a long fought out battle between the two players but it would be Acuna who would leave with the 7-5, 7-6 victory which secured the sweep for the Bulls.
The Bulls will be back in action on Friday, February 19, when they host Middle Tennessee State University at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts. The match is set to start at 2 p.m.
