TAMPA- The University of South Florida men's tennis team returned to action on Saturday when the Bulls hosted the No. 71 University of Central Florida Knights. The Bulls lost to the Knights 4-3.
Senior
Thomas Estrada and junior
Jamal Adderley started out competition for the Bulls in their No. 1 doubles match against Blaze Schwartz and Marc Rocafort. Estrada and Adderley fell to Schwartz and Rocafort 8-2.
Sophomore
Mark Oljaca and freshman
Juan Carlos Acuna Gerard competed in the No. 3 doubles spot for USF against Brock Sakey and Claudio Romano. Things were tied 4-4 before Sakey and Romano went on to win the next four games to earn the 8-4 victory. With the win, the Knights earned the 1-0 advantage heading into singles action.
Sophomore Wael Kilani and sophomore Yannick Yoshizawa closed out doubles competition for the Bulls in their No. 2 doubles match against Joe Delinks and Johan Beigart. Kilani and Yoshizawa were down 7-2 before they battled back to tie the match 7-7. Delinks and Beigart went on to win the next two games, though, which gave them the 9-7 victory over Kilani and Yoshizawa.
Kilani, who is ranked No. 100 in the ITA, started out singles competition for USF with a win. Kilani took on Rocafort in the No. 1 singles spot and he took down Rocafort in two straight sets 6-3, 6-0. That gave the Bulls their first point of the day and it tied things up between the two teams.
Freshman
Peter Frank kept the momentum going for the Bulls in his No. 3 singles match against Schwartz. Frank downed Schwartz 6-4, 6-1. USF now led UCF 2-1.
Oljaca took on Beigart in the No. 5 singles spot on Saturday. Both players battled it out in the first set. Things were tied 5-5 before Beigart went on to win the next two sets to pick up the 7-5 first set win. In the second set Oljaca would fall to Beigart 6-1. That once again tied things up between the two teams 2-2.
Adderley competed in the No. 2 singles spot for USF against Sakey. Despite keeping things close Adderley would fall to Sakey in the first set 7-6. In the second set Sakey would top Adderley 6-2. Central Florida now led 3-2.
Junior
Romain Deridder took on Romano in the No. 4 singles spot. After winning the first set 6-2, Deridder lost the next two sets 6-4, 6-2. That gave the Knights the fourth and final point they needed to pick up the win over USF.
Yoshizawa closed things out for the Bulls in his No. 6 singles match against Nino Hasadedic. After falling in the first set 7-5, Yoshizawa would battle back and win the next two sets 6-2, 6-3.
The Bulls will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Louisiana to take on the LSU Tigers. The match is set to start at 3 p.m. This will be the Bulls final regular season match. Next up for USF will be the BIG EAST Championships where the Bulls will get a chance to defend their title. The BIG EAST Championships will take place at Notre Dame April 22-25.
