TAMPA- The University of South Florida men's tennis team competed in its final match of the 2010 season on Tuesday when the Bulls traveled to Louisiana to take on the No. 55 LSU Tigers. The Bulls fell to the Tigers 4-3.
Sophomore Wael Kilani and sophomore Yannick Yoshizawa started the day out for USF with a win. Kilani and Yoshizawa took on Stefan Szacinski and Olivier Borsos in the No. 2 doubles spot. Kilani and Yoshizawa downed Szacinski and Borsos 8-5.
Senior
Thomas Estrada and junior
Jamal Adderley competed in the No. 1 doubles spot against No. 43 Sebastian Carlsson and Neil Skupski. Carlsson and Skupski topped Estrada and Adderley 8-4.
With each team having won one doubles match it would all come down to the No. 3 doubles match to decide who would have the 1-0 advantage heading into singles competition. Sophomore
Mark Oljaca and freshman
Juan Carlos Acuna Gerard took on Mark Bowtell and Julien Gauthier in the No. 3 doubles spot. After falling behind 6-2, Oljaca and Gerard fought back and tied the match 6-6. Bowtell and Gauthier went on to win the next two games, though, which gave them the 8-6 victory over Oljaca and Gerard. With the win, the Tigers earned the 1-0 lead heading into singles competition.
Adderley started out singles competition for the Bulls in his No. 2 singles match against Bowtell. Adderley fell to Bowtell in two straight sets 6-1, 7-5. That gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead over the Bulls.
Oljaca picked up the Bulls first point of the day in his No. 5 singles match against Szacinski. Oljaca downed Szacinski 6-3, 6-2. That brought USF within one of LSU.
No. 101 Kilani took on No. 51 Skupski in the No. 1 singles spot. Kilani took care of Skupski in two sets 7-6, 6-3. That tied things up between the two teams 2-2.
Yoshizawa competed in the No. 6 singles spot for USF against Cody Loup. After falling in the first set 6-2, Yoshizawa would battle back and win the next two sets 7-6, 6-3. The Bulls now led the Tigers 3-2.
Freshman
Peter Frank took on Carlsson in the No. 3 singles spot. After losing the first set 6-2, Frank would battle back and win the second set 6-3. In the third set Frank fell to Carlsson 6-3. That once again tied things up between the teams.
With each team having earned three points it would all come down to the No. 4 singles match to decide who would walk away with the win. Junior
Romain Deridder took on Gauthier in the No. 4 singles spot. In the first set Deridder would top Gauthier 7-6. Despite keeping it close in the second set, Deridder fell to Gauthier 7-5. In the third set both players would battle it out but it was Gauthier who walked away with the 7-5 third set victory. With the win, the Tigers earned the 4-3 victory over the Bulls.
The Bulls match against the Tigers closed out their regular season. Next up for USF is the BIG EAST Championships which will be taking place in Notre Dame April 22-25. In 2009, the Bulls earned their first BIG EAST title after defeating DePaul 4-0 in the finals of the BIG EAST Championships. USF will be looking to continue their success this season.
