Volleyball Blog: Kayla Walton

The University of South Florida volleyball team will give their thoughts on the 2011 season every week. The Bulls went 1-1 over the weekend, splitting a pair of contests with DePaul and Notre Dame. Sophomore
right-side hitter Kayla Walton talks about the team's return to BIG EAST play for the second half of the season...

Coming into this week of practice we were all ready to get back in the gym.  We experienced extreme team bonding last week during laser tag, team meetings, and even a day at the park!  We all felt rejuvenated and refreshed, ready to play volleyball come Tuesday.  Although we only had a few days at home, our on the road practices were just as intense.  First up was DePaul and we felt prepared and excited to release our inner beasts coming from an off-weekend.  Our goal was to be loud communicators through the entire match and we accomplished that.  We proved it in set one as we came up with a victory 25-15, and set two (25-16) and three (25-17) followed as we completed the match with a strong 3-0 victory.

After our match we celebrated, and headed to bed expecting to travel the next morning and practice at Notre Dame.  Once we came down to breakfast the coaches had a nice surprise for us, shopping in downtown Chicago.  It was truly an unforgettable experience.  As we all learned to speed shop, we enjoyed the cool weather and scenery of Chicago for one last moment before heading to Notre Dame where we watched video, and prepared for our opponent, the Fighting Irish.  Due to the football game we were at a hotel in a different time zone, so keeping track of time was a bit difficult but we survived it with no mishaps and were prepared for Sunday's game.

Waking up Sunday morning we all had the gut feeling of success.  From the bus ride, to the pregame rituals, the Bulls were ready to get on the floor and show Notre Dame who USF volleyball was.  Unfortunately, we lost our identity after game one, and Notre Dame defeated us in 3 sets (23-25, 17-25, 19-25).

We are using the match against Notre Dame as a learning experience, and we will be ready to bounce back this upcoming weekend as we HOST conference rivals -- #2 Louisville Friday the 28th at 7pm in the Rec Center, and #3 Cincinnati at 2pm on Sunday the 30th.  Sunday's match is also our DIG PINK match, so come out and support the Bulls Volleyball team, and wear your pink gear!! -- and of course DONATE!!! Thanks in advance for your DIG PINK support :)
