TAMPA - The USF women's golf team will lose a lot of
seasoned veterans after this season and head coach Marci Kornegay has reloaded
the roster.
Kornegay has signed Ashley Burke, Nicole Autrique, Erin
Selfridge and Lucy Robson, and each player will bring a lot of potential to USF
after the program loses Shena Yang, Amy West, Brie Heinzler and Karli Heimbecker
to graduation.
"I'm happy with this signing class. We are losing some
impact players and I feel we have replaced them with good, young talent,"
Kornegay said.
Burke will head to Tampa from American Heritage-Delray,
where she became a district champion and earned 2010-11 Palm Beach County JGA
Player of the Year honors. The Palm Beach native also became the 2010 South
Florida PGA Player of the Year and posted a top-three finish in the High School
Honda Classic this year.
"I've watched Ashley play a few times and I've really
been impressed with her distance and athleticism," Kornegay said. "I believe
her best golf is coming."
Mexico native Autrique has gained a ton of experience and
success at big events. She finished third at the World Junior Challenge and sixth
at the AJGA Abilene junior event in 2011. Autrique posted second-place finishes
at the Hank Haney IJGA and the AJGA Hilton Head junior event this year.
"I watched Nicole for the first time this summer at an
AJGA event in Hilton Head, where she was enrolled at the Hank Haney Academy,"
Kornegay said. "She impressed me with her course management and the decisions
she made on the course."
Selfridge, from Fleming Island, Fla., has accomplished
quite a bit at Daytona State University. The team finished fourth at the NJCAA
National Championship in 2011 while Selfridge took home NJCAA All-America
honors. She had two finishes in the top 10 at events this fall and Kornegay is
pleased to have her join USF's lineup.
"I've always been impressed with the players that come
from Dayton (Jessica Schnebly, Rachel Edwards, Amy West) and the skills that
coach Laura Brown has worked with them on," Kornegay said. "Erin is no
different. She has the desire to be the best she can be and has a passion for
the game. She will come in with tournament experience and will be an asset to
this team."
Robson comes to USF from Jensen Beach High School and
will bring more tournament experience to the Bulls. The 2011 Treasure Coast
Scripps Newspapers Golf of the Year led her high school team to fourth- and
second-place finishes at the state finals, and she's played on the Florida Cup
South Team the past two years. This year
she's placed in the top 10 at the IMG Junior Tour event, the AJGA preseason event,
and the Winston Trails Florida Junior Tour event.
"Lucy has an indisputable, true passion for the game of
golf. She works very hard with her teachers back home and has proven herself
very competitive in Florida," Kornegay said. "She wanted to stay close to home
and USF is a terrific fit for her to continue developing, and to stop in as a
freshman and start making moves."
