TAMPA – Kenshyra Jackon went deep twice and Lee Ann Spivey
hit a grand slam as USF tied a single-game program record with four
homers in a 12-1 win over Massachusetts on Friday night.
Spivey's
big hit powered USF to an eight-run fourth inning and Kourtney
Salvarola also homered in the Bulls' seventh consecutive victory.
The
Bulls (13-10) wound up with six homers on the first day of the USF
Under Armour Showcase. Stephanie Medina and Monica Santos each left the
yard in USF's 5-3 win over South Carolina earlier Friday afternoon.
“Anytime
you can put the pressure on the opposing pitching staff and the defense
they're going to throw differently. I thought they had to throw to us
tonight,” head coach Ken Eriksen said.
Sara
Nevins (6-4) earned a win in both games of the doubleheader and she
made history in the rout of UMass. The junior left-hander fanned four
batters and became only the third Bull to pass the 600-strikeout mark.
Current USF assistant coach Monica Triner owns the program record with
641 strikeouts followed by Leigh Ann Ellis (633).
“That's
pretty special stuff,” Eriksen said. “She's a special talent. We hope
that she's got 600 more in her in the next year and a half.”
UMass
got the scoring started in the first and the Bulls' power surge
continued in the bottom half of the inning. Jackson hit a two-run over
off the light pole in left-center field and Salvarola followed with a
solo shot to left field.
Jackson
went deep again in the third inning when she hit a 2-1 pitch over the
230-foot sign in center field for her team-leading fifth homer of the
season.
Jackson's fourth RBI of
the game sparked the eight-run fourth inning for the Bulls. Jackson hit a
sacrifice fly with the bases loaded and Spivey posted USF's fourth
homer of the game two batters later with a grand slam to right-center
field.
Allie Patierno capped off the scoring in the fourth with a three-run double to right-center field.
The Bulls finish their Showcase run 4:45 p.m. Saturday when they face Wagner at the Eddie C. Moore Complex in Clearwater.
