TAMPA, MARCH 16, 2014 – Kourtney Salvarola led the Bulls at the plate with two runs batted in as the Bulls cruised past Wagner, 6-1, in the Michele Smith Spring Break Tournament on Sunday afternoon.
USF (24-8) needed just five hits to score its six runs and chased Wagner's starting pitcher, Gina Massaro, in the third inning after taking a 3-1 lead.
The Bulls played some small ball to get on the board in the first inning as Juli Weber (Hegins, Pa.) scored on a squeeze bunt by Salvarola (Arnold, Md.) for a 1-0 lead. Weber reached on a walk to start the inning, advanced to second on a passed ball and was sacrificed to third on a bunt from Ashli Goff (Tampa) before coming home to score.
Wagner came right back, however, tying the game with a solo homer by Abby Beasley in the top of the second. Goff nearly made the catch, but the ball just glanced off her glove before going over the wall in left field.
A two-run third inning put USF back on top as Wagner committed an error on a throw to home that allowed Salvarola to score and gave up an RBI single to Veronica Gajownik (Winter Park) one batter later.
Sam Greiner (Sparta, N.J.) got the start for the Bulls but was relieved by Sara Nevins (Pinellas Park) in the fourth. The senior lefty came in with runners on second and third with no outs but recorded three straight strikeouts to get the Bulls out of the jam.
The Bulls tacked on another three runs on three hits in the fourth to increase their lead to five. Salvarola roped her second double of the game into left center to score Weber. Courtney Goff (Tampa) recorded an RBI in her first at-bat of the game with a groundout to second and Lee Ann Spivey sent a rocket off the third basemen's glove for an RBI single to cap off the scoring in the fourth.
Nevins struck out 10 of the 12 batters she faced and only allowed one base runner in four innings on the way to picking up her 14th win this season.
USF takes on Marist at 4:50 p.m. to finish play in the tournament.
