TAMPA, MARCH 2, 2014 – Senior ace Sara Nevins threw a one-hit complete game shutout as the Bulls continued their dominant play in the Under Armour Invitational with an 8-0 win over Villanova at the USF Softball Stadium.
With the win the Bulls improved to 13-5 overall and are 5-0 in the tournament with run-rule victories in their past four contests.
Stephanie Medina and Kourtney Salvarola both drove in runs with singles in the third to get the Bulls on the board. Ashli Goff started the inning with a bunt single and Ta'coia Williams walked one batter later to put runners on first and second.
The Bulls posted a big inning in the fifth, scoring four runs on three hits and two Villanova errors. Medina got the inning started with a single to right and was pinch run for by Courtney Goff. She advanced to second on an error and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Salvarola.
Erica Nunn grounded out to second to score Goff from third and the offense took off from there. Monica Santos doubled off the left field wall for an RBI and Nunn came around to score on another Wildcat's error one batter later to make it 5-0. Juli Weber's single up the middle capped off the scoring and put the Bulls up by six runs heading into the sixth.
More errors would bite Villanova in the sixth as center fielder Shea Palmer dropped what would have been the third out and allowed Salvarola to score. Veronica Gajownik followed that with a single to right field to make it 8-0 and end the game.
The complete game for Nevins was her second straight and she has only allowed three hits in her last two starts. The Pinellas Park, Fla., native tied a season high with 10 strikeouts on the way to registering her eighth straight victory.
The Bulls conclude play for the weekend with a matchup against Maine at the USF Softball Stadium.
