DeLand, Fla. (April 2, 2014) –  USF scored a run in the ninth inning but stranded nine runners on base throughout the game falling to Stetson 2-1 Wednesday afternoon at Melching Field.

After Lawrence Pardo (Miami) picked up a base hit in the first inning putting runners on first and second with one out, 14 straight Bulls were retired until the sixth inning.

Stetson scored the game's first run in the second inning on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Kyle Pitts scoring Garrett Russini on the play.

USF loaded the bases in the sixth which began with a Nik Alfonso (Tampa) single to right field.  After a sacrifice bunt advanced him to second, Levi Borders (Winter Haven) walked and Pardo was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  A fielder's choice getting the runner out at the plate for the second out ensued before a ground out ended the scoring threat.

The Bulls again loaded the bases in the seventh inning but were unable to push across a run.

Stetson added an important insurance run in the bottom half of the frame on a bases loaded fielder's choice as USF attempted to turn a double play on a high chopper up the middle.

In the ninth, Luke Borders (Winter Haven) came on to pinch-hit and ripped a one-out double in the left-centerfield gap.  He moved up to third on a ground out before  Andres Leal (Tampa) hit a high chopper to second base which the fielder couldn't handle cleanly allowing him to reach and Borders to come across for USF's only run of the game.

Cody Hernandez (Tampa) made his first collegiate start going 3.1 innings allowing one run on four hits while striking out two in the losing effort.  Janick Serrallonga (Hialeah) allowed an unearned run over the next 2.2 innings before Casey Mulholland (Bradenton) and Jordan Strittmatter (Daytona) both worked a scoreless inning.

Adam Schaly earned the win for Stetson tossing four shutout innings.  He allowed just one hit and struck out three.  Kevin Fagan picked up his first save of the year tossing the final two innings.

Offensively, Kyle Zech had the only multi-hit performance in the game going 2-for-3 with a run scored.

After a five game road swing, USF returns to USF Baseball Stadium this weekend when it hosts rival UCF in an American Athletic Conference series.  Game one is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Friday, April 4.
