Youth Shines in Final Day at Johnie Imes Invite

COLUMBIA, MO. (Sept. 30, 2014) - The USF women's golf team is one filled with young talent, a talent made apparent on the final day of the Johnie Imes Invitational.

Three underclassmen shot a combined three-under-par in the final round at The Club at Old Hawthorne in Columbia, Mo., sending the Bulls up the ladder and past Wichita State and Bradley to place seventh of 15 teams in the first tournament of the season.

After posting back-to-back rounds of 300 (+12) on the par-72 course, USF used 13 birdies from sophomores Ashley Burke, Nicole Autrique and redshirt freshman Maria Rodriguez to shave off eight strokes in the final round, recording a season-low round of 292 (+4) to finish the tournament at 892 (+28), a full four strokes ahead of eighth-place Wichita State.

Collecting four birdies in the final round, Autrique carded her best round of the weekend, shooting a 70 (-2) to finish in a tie for 16th out of 84 individuals. Autrique shot 217 over 54 holes, consistently leading the Bulls.

Having already posted a 70 in the opening round, Burke shook off a tough second round to play scratch golf (72) in the third. The effort sent Burke to a two-day total of 221, in a tie for 26th place.

Also going low in the final round was Rodriguez, who posted a team-best five birdies Tuesday to shoot a 71 (-1), and finish in a tie for 50th overall, at 229.

Host-school Missouri won the tournament, compiling a final score of 846 (-18), but it was Kansas St. taking home the individual title, with Connie Jaffrey finishing 54 holes in 208 strokes, eight strokes under par. For full results, click HERE.
