LECANTO, FLA. Jan. 26, 2015 – Steady days from sophomores Ashley Burke and Maria Rodriguez led to a USF sweep of the two individual awards and strong all-around play landed the USF women's golf team with a tiebreaker finish in the spring season opener Monday at the par-72 Black Diamond Ranch in Lecanto, Fla.
The Bulls shot 294 (+6) in the first round, and posted a 299 (+11) in the second as a team to outshoot Florida State, Florida and FIU, while tying Miami in the 36-hole Florida Challenge. USF topped Miami by three strokes in the final round, forcing a one-hole playoff for the tournament championship. Miami ousted the Bulls on the par-5 ninth hole, picking up the championship.
Burke helped set the tone for USF early, notching a team-low 71 (-1) in the first round, helping send the sophomore to her first individual championship of her career. Following up a great first round, Burke sank birdies on the fourth, 11th, 14th and 16th holes in the second round to card a 36-hole total of 144 (E), despite strong winds picking up throughout the day.
Burke's seven birdies were eclipsed by a tournament-best 10 birdies from sophomore Maria Rodriguez. Rodriguez sailed through the first round, posting six birdies en route to a score of 73 (+1), then carded four more in the second round to shoot 72 (E), finishing the day in second place, just one shot over par.
Contributing to the cause, sophomore Nicole Autrique carded a first-round 74 (+2), finishing the day in 15 place with a 36-hole total of 152. Senior Erin Selfridge posted two counting scores, grabbing consistent totals of 76 (+4) and 77 (+5) for the Bulls.
