TAMPA, FEB. 6, 2015 – On Feb. 21 of last season Erica Nunn and Sara Nevins combined to throw a no-hitter in a 5-0 win over Illinois State. On Friday night Nunn was able to duplicate the feat on her own as she tossed her first-career solo no-hitter in a dominating 7-0 win over the same Illinois State Redbirds.
“It was awesome,” Nunn said of her performance after the game. “I really didn't think about it until the last inning and that's when the butterflies kicked it, but yeah it was great.”
The junior lefty from Apex, N.C., was dominate throughout, recording 10 strikeouts on the night on the way to picking up her first win of the season in front of a crowd of 617 at the USF Softball Stadium.
“She really put her nose to the grindstone tonight and competed. We really needed a good outing to keep that team at zero for as long as possible, so I was pretty excited about that,” head coach Ken Eriksen said.
Nunn had plenty of support from the Bulls' offense as they scored seven runs for the second straight night to open the season. Lee Ann Spivey (Palm Coast, Fla.), Karla Claudio (San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico) and Lauren Evans (Land O' Lakes, Fla.) all posted multi-hit games and five different players recorded an RBI.
“We're getting people off the bench right now that are contributing. Kassie Moeller last night with two hits, Karla Claudio comes in tonight with a couple of knocks and Lauren Evans the same thing,” Eriksen said. “You got a lot of talent on this team and the toughest job really is sitting in the office in the afternoon trying to make out the lineup for the evening.”
USF (2-0) jumped out to an early lead when Kristen Wyckoff (Plant City, Fla.) scored on an illegal pitch from Illinois State (1-1) starter Regan Romshek in the first inning. Claudio made it 2-0 later in the inning with an RBI double to score Spivey all the way from first.
The Bulls added another run in the fourth on an RBI single by Wyckoff to score Astin Donovan (Guilford, Conn.). The offense busted the game wide open with a 4-run fifth inning that saw three players drive in runs, capped off by Evans' first-career home run, a 2-run laser over the left field fence to make it 7-0.
USF continues play in the USF Softball Classic with a doubleheader tomorrow night against No. 8 Michigan and Jacksonville. First pitch for the showdown with the nationally ranked Wolverines is set for 6 p.m. Purchase tickets HERE.
