TAMPA (March 1, 2015)— It was a career day for RHP Joe Cavallaro as the freshman threw seven shutout innings and tied his career high with five strikeouts in a 3-0 win over High Point in the series finale Sunday afternoon.
Cavallaro now boasts a 2-0 record, with a 0.55 ERA. The freshman has given up just three runs (one earned) on six hits, to go with 14 strikeouts and five walks in 16.1 innings of work.
“To come out and shut them out today, it was a very good indication of what he can do here,” head coach Mark Kingston said. “If you throw strikes, get ahead of hitters and the defense plays well, you can win.”
The Bulls struck first in the bottom of the second to take a 2-0 lead. Luke Maglich led off the inning with a double, before being driven home on a Luke Borders RBI triple. One batter later, a Daniel Portales RBI drove in Borders.
USF tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh.
Borders hit his second extra-base hit of the game, reaching on a double. He advanced to third on a Portales groundout before scoring on a sac fly by Zac Gilcrease.
Borders went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Austin Lueck and Kyle Teaf both extended their on-base streaks to ten games, both reaching on walks. Tommy Peterson earned the save, pitching one inning of scoreless ball.
Up next for the Bulls is a two-game, midweek series at Florida State. USF will play Tuesday, March 3, and Wednesday, March 4, on ESPN3. First pitch for both games is slated for 4:00 p.m.
