TAMPA (March 18, 2015) – Coming off a three-match sweep at the USF Spring Break Tournament, the Bulls stretched their win streak to eight by defeating No. 25 Minnesota, 4-3, on Wednesday afternoon at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts.
USF (13-4) set the tone for the match by clinching the doubles point, which proved crucial to the Bulls' victory over Minnesota (10-5).
“[Minnesota] has a very good team in doubles and we have a very strong team in doubles, so we knew that would be a huge point,” said head coach Matt Hill. “The guys played really well today, especially at No. 1 and No. 3, so that gave us a lot of confidence moving into the singles.”
The tandum of Roberto Cid and Ignacio Gonzalez-Muniz took court three, 6-2. The Oliver Pramming-Justin Roberts pair earned the Bulls the go-ahead point.
Pramming's early 6-2, 6-4 singles win lengthened the Bulls' lead to 2-0. Not soon after, Minnesota's Matic Spec took court four in two-set fashion.
The top two courts clinched the win for the Bulls as Sasha Gozun earned the third Bulls' point. Cid fought from behind in the second set to earn the decisive point, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.
The Golden Gophers finalized their score at three with wins on courts five and six.
USF continues American Athletic Conference play on March 29 with a home match against Tulsa at 1 p.m. Admission is free at the USF Varsity Courts.
“Tulsa is a very good team and is doing really well right now,” said Hill. “We're going to start prepping for them and continuing to build towards the end of the season when things really matter.”
