TAMPA (April 11, 2015)— Casey Mullholland led the way for the USF baseball team to clinch its third conference series as the Bulls shut out ECU, 10-0, Saturday night.
An hour long rain delay didn't faze Mullholland (4-4), who had his best outing of the season, throwing eight innings of shutout ball. The senior struck out 10 while giving up just seven hits and walking none.
The Bulls started the scoring early, plating three runs in the first. Kyle Teaf led off the inning with a double before coming home on a Kevin Merrell RBI single. Levi Borders hit his sixth homer of the season, and second in three games, to put the Bulls up 3-0.
USF extended its lead in the bottom of the fourth knocking in four runs on four hits and one error. Kevin Merrell bunted his way on base, scoring Austin Lueck who reached on a one-out walk, before advancing to second on a throwing error by the ECU third baseman. Levi Borders followed up with an RBI double to score Merrell and Teaf before a Luke Borders RBI single extended the lead to seven.
The Bulls continued their scoring in the fifth as Lueck drove in Daniel Portales with a line drive single. Levi Borders hit a two-out double to left center to score Lueck and Merrell, who reached on his 17th bunt single of the year.
All nine starters recorded a hit, with the top three batters having multi-hit games. Merrell was 3-for-4 on the night with three runs and an RBI, while Kyle Teaf was 2-for-4 with two runs and his 129th career walk. Levi Borders went 3-for-5 at the plate with six RBI and two runs.
Brandon Lawson preserved the shutout, facing just four batters and striking out three. It was the Bulls fifth shutout on the season and first over a conference opponent.
USF will look to sweep its second conference opponent Sunday April 12, at 11 a.m. as the two teams meet in the series finale.
