Box Score 2 TAMPA (March 16, 2016)— The USF softball team picked up its 20th and 21st wins of the season, sweeping a doubleheader with Lehigh and Maine. The Bulls defeated the Mountain Hawks 13-2, before topping the Black Bears 9-3.
USF has now won 13 straight games and 19 of the last 21. The Bulls have hit at least one home run in their last 11 games and hit at least two in four of the last five.
The Bulls return to the field on Friday, March 18, for a doubleheader with Chattanooga and Georgia Tech beginning at 1:45 p.m.
Game One: USF 13, Lehigh 2
Kristen Wyckoff went 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI and Mo Santos went 2-for-4 with two runs and four RBI as the Bulls topped Lehigh, 13-2.
The Bulls took an early three-run lead after the first inning, sending every batter to the plate. Kristen Wyckoff led off with a single, stole two bases, and came home on a throwing error to put USF on the board before Juli Weber even finished her first at-bat. Weber walked and came around on a pair of singles and a sac bunt, scoring on an Erica Nunn RBI single. Mia Fung, who singled in her first at-bat, scored on a Mo Santos fielder's choice RBI to make it 3-0 after the first.
Similar to the first inning, Kristen Wyckoff led off with a single and came home on a Weber triple. Lee Ann Spivey and Santos each drove in a run to make it 6-0 with just one out. Astin Donovan got in on the scoring action, driving in a pair on a bases loaded RBI single. With the top of the order due back up, Wyckoff drove in Donovan on an RBI single in her second at-bat of the inning.
USF tacked on another three runs in the third on a Santos RBI double and a Cassidy Boyle sacrifice fly. Sam Worrell hit her fourth home run of the season in the fourth inning, making it 13-0.
Lehigh got on the board in the fifth on an RBI double from Cassie Lejeunesse and an RBI single from Katie Schultz.
Nunn picked up her 10th win of the season, throwing three shutout innings. The senior struck out five and gave up just three hits. Susan Wysocki closed out the game, throwing two innings of two-run ball.
Game Two: USF 9, Maine 3
The Bulls used two four-run innings to extend their win streak to 13 games with a 9-2 win over Maine.
Maine struck first on a solo home run to left center by Maddie Decker in the top of the second inning. The Black Bears would add another run in the third on an RBI single from Rachel Harvey.
USF cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly from Mia Fung, scoring Kristen Wyckoff. The Bulls would load the bases with just one out, but were unable to plate any more runs.
In the fourth, the Bulls plated four runs to take the lead. A pair of walks with one out put two on for Juli Weber. On the first pitch, Weber doubled to centerfield to drive in Lauren Evans and Wyckoff. Fung hit her team-leading eighth home run of the season to plate Weber and put USF on top 5-2.
On the first pitch of the fifth inning, Sam Worrell hit her second home run of the day and fifth of the year to make it a 6-2 game. Worrell is now just three home runs away from tying the USF freshman home run record, set by Stephanie Medina in 2011.
USF continues to plate runs in the fifth, using a Maine error, and RBI groundout and an RBI single. After Worrell's home run, Evans walked and Astin Donovan singled to put two on with no outs. Wyckoff followed with a single and a throwing error by the Maine shortstop allowed Evans to score. Donovan scored on a Fung groundout and Wyckoff followed on a Lee Ann Spivey RBI single.
Susan Wysocki picked up her fifth win of the season, throwing two scoreless innings and striking out three. Erica Nunn earned her third save of the season, throwing 2.2 innings and giving up just one run.
