Box Score TAMPA, March 19, 2016 – Monica Santos tied the USF single-game record for doubles with three, and Cassidy Boyle scored the game-winning run as the USF softball team pulled out a scrappy, 4-3, win over Kent State Saturday night.
After a five hour delay due to rain in the area, the Bulls (24-9) secured their 16th-straight win in a tough battle that lasted just over two hours.
A little bit of trickery in the fifth helped the Bulls tie the game after Kent State jumped out to a 1-0 lead back in the first. Kristen Wyckoff singled and moved to second on a sac bunt from Juli Weber. An error by the KSU second baseman allowed Lee Ann Spivey to reach, putting runners on the corners with two outs.
Spivey and Wyckoff pulled off a double steal as Wyckoff stole home to tie the game. The scoring didn't stop there as Mo Santos hit her third double of the night, plating Spivey and Erica Nunn to make it a 3-1 game after five innings. Santos' third double tied the record set in 1995 by Eileen Leary against Stetson.
KSU answered back, plating a pair of runs in the top of the sixth. With the bases loaded on a pair of singles and an error, another error drove in a run. KSU would tie the game on a fielder's choice RBI.
Not going down without a fight, the Bulls plated the winning run in the bottom of the sixth. Boyle was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Astin Donovan. Weber would move Boyle to third on a fielder's choice, and a throwing error by the second basemen would allow her to score the winning run.
Susan Wysocki picked up the win, throwing just two-thirds of an inning, but getting the Bulls out of a bases-loaded jam. Nunn picked up her fourth save of the year, throwing 6.1 innings and striking out five.
The Bulls will rest up on Sunday before returning to the field Monday, March 21, for a 6 p.m. matchup against Marist. USF will face Northwestern on Tuesday, May 22, at 5 p.m. before hitting the road for a three-game series at East Carolina to open conference play March 24-26.
