Wysocki Shuts Out Detroit in Five Innings

Box Score

TAMPA (March 7, 2016)— Solid pitching from Susan Wysocki and home runs from Mia Fung and Juli Weber led the USF softball team (12-9) to an 8-0, five-inning win over Detroit (5-14) Monday night. The Bulls have now won four in a row and will look to extend that streak later this week.

The Bulls got off to a hot start, sending all nine batters to the plate in the first inning. After a quick groundout from Kristen Wyckoff, Weber singled to put one on for Fung. Fung took a swing at the first pitch she saw and sent a two-run homer over the centerfield wall.

Lee Ann Spivey and Sam Worrell each drew a walk and Mo Santos singled to load the bases for Lauren Evans. Evans recorded her team-leading 17th RBI on a groundout to make it 3-0 USF.

Lindsey Devitt drew a four-pitch walk to reload the bases, bringing up Astin Donovan. Donovan singled up the middle and drove in Santos and Worrell making it a 5-0 game after one inning.

In the third, the Bulls loaded the bases once again behind a Spivey single and two walks. Spivey was erased at the plate on an Evans fielder's choice, but Devitt followed with an RBI single to reload the bases. Donovan recorded a sacrifice fly to centerfield to drive home Worrell and make it 7-0.

Weber led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run, her third of the year, to put the run-rule in effect. The junior has now had a hit in 13 straight games and reached base safely in 17 games.

Susan Wysocki picked up her second win of the season, throwing her first complete game of the year. She gave up just two hits and two walks in five innings and picked up her first shutout win of the season.

“The team coming out and scoring five runs off the bat makes you more comfortable in the game,” she said. “My pitches were working really well and I knew my defense had my back.”

The Bulls will be back on the field Wednesday, March 9, at 5 p.m. for a doubleheader with Utah. The week wraps up with the Under Armour Showcase with USF playing five games at the USF Softball Stadium and the Eddie C. Moore Complex in Clearwater, Fla.
