Tampa, Fla., April 12, 2023 – The University of South Florida track and field team will split into two squads again this weekend, sending student-athletes to the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa., and the UNF Invite in Jacksonville, Fla.
Penn Relays
Sanique Walker, Madeline Abega, and Chakiya Plummer begin USF's competition at the Penn Relays on Thursday evening, competing in the women's 400 meter hurdles at 5:00 p.m., while Michael Bourne III will be competing in the men's event.
On Friday, both the men's and women's 4x100 relays compete beginning in the afternoon session at 12:45 p.m for the women and 1:15 p.m. for the men, followed by the 4x200 events.. The teams will be competing in the Championship of America groups.
Hannah Connell kicks off Friday's individual competition at 3:00 p.m. in the women's 100-meter dash. Connell will also be competing in the 100m hurdles, along with Plummer, and Abega, while Bourne returns to the track for the men's competition.
Both the men's and women's 4x400 relays will wrap up the day of competition on Friday.
On Saturday, Nia Robinson and Shaniya Benjamin start off the day in the women's long jump championship at 12 p.m. Robinson later returns to the field for the high jump championships.
Romaine Beckford is USF's lone male field competitor at the Penn Relays. He'll compete in the high jump at 2:30 p.m. on Friday.
UNF Invite
Kendell Mosley kicks off the UNF Invite for the Bulls at 3 p.m. on Friday in the men's high jump. Also at 3 p.m., Kobe Babin, Noah Bitter, and Stone Baker compete in the men's pole vault and Alliya Boothe participates in the women's shot put.
In other field events for the day, Victor Steiner compete in the men's long jump, along with Annia Ashley, Jadaja Baxter, Loren Johnson and Kendall McDaniel in the women's event at 6 p.m. Boothe competes again in the women's hammer throw, while Johann Jeremiah participates in the men's shot put. Ella Dolce, Riley Hunt, and Audrey Wuerffel all compete in the women's pole vault.
In Friday's track events, Arden La-Rose, Carolyn Brown, Victoria Valdez, Alyssa Wyatt and Patricija Roshofa will run in the women's 1500m at 7:30 p.m., followed by Jesse Benavides and Ezekiel Shore competing in the men's event to close out the first day of competition.
On Saturday, Jeremiah begins the day in the men's discus at 11 a.m. Ashley and Johnson return for their second event of the UNF Invite, this time in the women's triple jump at 1 p.m., while Ajama represents the men for USF. Ashley will also be competing in the high jump along with McDaniel to wrap up the field events for the day.
At 12:30 p.m., Arden La-Rose, Carolyn Brown, Victoria Valdez and Alyssa Wyatt competes in the women's 800 meters, followed by Jesse Benavides and Ezekiel Shore in the men's competition.
Steiner will compete in the 110m hurdles. Jadaja Baxter run in the women's 100 meters at 3 p.m. to wrap up competition in Jacksonville.
About USF Track and Field
The USF track and field team has earned 56 All-American selections and at least one All-American in 10 of the last 12 years, including a record eight athletes claiming 11 honors in 2021. Romaine Beckford won the 2023 NCAA Indoor Championship in the men's high jump. Tampa native Shaniya Benjamin set a program record earning three All-American honors during the 2021 outdoor season, while triple jumper Matthew O'Neal, a 2016 graduate, became USF's first six-time NCAA All-American. Bulls have posted two NCAA runner-up finishes since 2013 - O'Neal (triple jump, 2016) and Courtney Anderson (high jump, 2013). Head coach Erik Jenkins took over the program in 2020 and in the 2021 outdoor season the Bulls posted seven program records and 40 top 10 all-time program marks. USF hosted the 2018 NCAA Track and Field East Preliminary and the 2021 AAC Outdoor Championship at the USF Track and Field Stadium located on the east end of campus.
