Amateurism

Every college-bound student-athlete, both domestic and international, who is attending an NCAA Division I or II college or university for the first time, must be certified by the NCAA Eligibility Center.  You will be asked various questions regarding your sport participation history.  Those college-bound student-athletes include anyone who is transferring from any two- or four-year colleges or universities (including international colleges or universities) that are not members of NCAA Division I or II. Thus, if an individual wants to participate in athletics at an NCAA Division I or II college or university, the college-bound student-athlete must register with the NCAA Eligibility Center and submit the appropriate documentation to receive a certification decision.  The NCAA membership has adopted amateurism rules to ensure that NCAA amateurism requirements are adhered to create an experience that all student-athletes are competing equitably.

In general, amateurism requirements do not allow:
  • Contracts with professional teams
  • Salary for participating in athletics
  • Prize money above actual and necessary expenses
  • Play with professionals
  • Tryouts, practice or competition with a professional team
  • Benefits from an agent or prospective agent
  • Agreement to be represented by an agent
  • Delayed initial full-time collegiate enrollment to participate in organized sports competition
