TAMPA, Fla. ? The University of South Florida women's basketball team got 11 points from Jessica Lawson and 10 points from Jazmine Sepulveda in a 61-49 loss to Providence Tuesday night at the Sun Dome.
The Bulls (10-7, 0-4 BIG EAST) outscored the Friars 34-13 off the bench, 24-22 in the paint and 11-6 in second chance points, however only shot 28.8 percent (17-59) from the field en route to the loss.
USF had the lead only once, 3-2 with 19:17 left on the clock in the first half. Providence (11-5, 1-2 BIG EAST) would take the lead and extend it to as many as 17 points (39-22) with 1:09 left in the half. The Friars would eventually take a 39-24 lead into the locker room at the intermission after hitting 56.5 percent (13-23) of their shots from the field in the first 20 minutes including a blistering 71.4 percent (5-7) from three-point range.
The Bulls would make a run late in the second stanza cutting the lead to nine points (56-47) on a three-point play by ChiChi Okpaleke with 2:21 left in the contest, but would not get any closer.
In addition to Lawson and Sepulveda, Daiane Packer scored nine points on 3-4 shooting from behind the three-point arc. Porche Grant added a team-high nine rebounds.
USF will hit the road for its second visit to the Metropolitan New York area in the past 11 days when it faces Seton Hall on Saturday at 2 p.m. in South Orange, NJ. The Bulls will not return home until Saturday, Jan. 26 when they take on Marquette at 7 p.m. in the Sun Dome.
