TAMPA, Fla. ? The University of South Florida women's basketball team continued to protect their home court by defeating the University of North Florida 90-44 on Sunday afternoon, moving the Bulls to 8-1 on the season. The victory was also USF's fourth straight.
Although the Bulls scored 90 points for the sixth time in nine games this season ? while holding the opposition to fewer than 50 points for the fourth time this year ? the big story was USF on the defensive end of the floor. The Bulls forced the Lady Osprey (2-5, 1-1 Atlantic Sun) into a season-high 39 turnovers marking the fifth time this season that USF has forced it's foe into 30 or more miscues.
The Bulls trailed for first six-plus minutes of the game before taking a two-point lead, 13-11, on a three-pointer by Janae Stokes with 13:29 left in the first half. USF finally found their rhythm and broke away using an 11-0 run to take a 13-point lead, 24-11, when Jazmine Sepulveda hit the first of two free throws with 8:17 left in the half. The Bulls would eventually take a 41-22 lead into the locker room at the break.
As has been the case this season, USF came out hungry the second half staying well ahead of the Lady Osprey's scoring 49 points in the second stanza. The Bulls shot a blistering 62.5 percent (20-32) in the final 20 minutes, considerably better than their 35.7 percent (15-42) in the first half.
Coming off of a season-high tying 24 points against FIU, Sepulveda led the Bulls offense again with 16 points, including 12 points in the first half alone. She also recorded a career-high for steals with eight breaking her season-high of six and career high of seven originally set against Yale on Dec. 30, 2007. She also finished with four assists and three rebounds.
After tallying just four points in the first half, Shantia Grace scored eight points in the second half and finished with 12 on the afternoon.
Defensively, Brittany Denson owned the boards with eight rebounds and tied her season-high with 12 points.
For the Lady Ospreys, Jennifer Bowen led the way with 11 points. Brittany Kirkland, the Lady Osprey's top scorer coming into the game averaging nine points per game, was held to just six points. Both Bowen and Kayla Mobley shared team-high rebounding honors grabbing nine apiece.
Up next for the Bulls is Grambling at home Thursday night at 7 p.m.
