Get Out Your Stopwatches Coach Leavitt will run the 40-yard dash at 3 p.m. Thursday on the USF practice fields. The running is open to the media.
His time will be used as a standard for the students that competed in the USF combine prelims last week and those that will compete in the final during the Spring Game Saturday.
Every student that beats Leavitt's official time will get a complimentary t-shirt emblazoned with “I'm Faster Than Leavitt”.
After practice Coach Leavitt joked that he could beat Urban Meyer and Bob Stoops in the 40-yard dash. He thinks he'll crack the 6.0 second mark, but thought he would need to be downwind and on a slope to break 5.9 seconds.
BullsVision has exlusive video of one of the more entertaining media sessions this spring.
A Legendary Visitor University of Tampa legend and former San Francisco 49er Freddie Solomon came out to the USF practice this afternoon. Solomon was selected by the Miami Dolphins in the 2nd round of the 1975 NFL Draft. A 5'11", 184-lb. wide receiver, Solomon played in 11 NFL seasons for the Dolphins and San Francisco 49ers from 1975 to 1985. Solomon made two Super Bowl appearances as a member of the 49ers.
Solomon will be back on campus later this spring to address the offense at the request of offensive coordinator Mike Canales.
On his way out of the complex, Solomon told the coaches, "We appreciate everything you have done here at USF and for our community."
T-Mac Update Tyrone McKenzie came by the USF offices on Wednesday and told us that he worked out for New Orleans last week and that he has scheduled workouts with the Bucs, Patriots and Giants next week.
Let the Competition and Trash-Talking Begin... As the 2009 Spring Game approaches the competition heats up between the four Spring Combine finalists who will battle it out for the title of USF Spring Combine Champion on the field April 11.
Joe Addison enters Saturday's competition as the leader in all four categories ? 40-yard dash (4.74), shuttle run (4.33), broad jump (9-4) and the three-cone drill (7.46) ? though the other finalists have questioned Addison's status as the favorite to win it all.
“My leg was hurt last weekend and I barely lost, I'll show him what's up on Saturday," said finalist Zach Carter who trailed Addison in the 40-yard dash by one-hundredth of a second (4.75).
Addison responded by suggesting Carter consult his mother for pointers on how to improve his own 40-yard performance.
Contestant Brandon Moore also had something to say as his 40-yard dash time of 4.79 was not far off Addison's performance.
“I lost by three-hundredths of a second,” he said. “I stutter stepped, Joe better watch out on Saturday.”
Addison remained unphased by the competition, responding “I had my hat on, it cut down on my velocity, (Moore) will see on Saturday.”
The last finalists, Brian Mazanec also revealed that his qualifying strategy may be at fault for lulling his competition into a false sense of security as his 40-yard time currently stands at 4.98 entering the finals.
“I was just trying to qualify,” said Mazanec. “I wasn't really trying to win, but I'll win this Saturday and show Joe and them how real boys do it.”
Mazanec's admission prompted Joe to reveal that he wasn't even trying, which could cause his time to drop significantly in the championship. When given the opportunity to shoot back at his competition, the front-runner opted to do his talking on the field Saturday saying, “I have no comment for my competitors, good luck and may the best man win.” |
