TAMPA, MARCH 22, 2014 – Sara Nevins had a season-high 15 strikeouts and Stephanie Medina hit a grand slam to lead the Bulls past Connecticut, 6-2, in their conference opener on Saturday afternoon at the USF Softball Stadium.
The win marked the Bulls first-ever victory in an American Athletic Conference game after moving to the conference from the Big East this season.
Neither team was able to score in the first two innings, but the Bulls would eventually strike first with an RBI double by Juli Weber (Hegins, Pa.) in the third inning. Kristen Wyckoff (Plant City) scored all the way from first on the play after she singled over the third baseman's head earlier in the inning.
Ta'coia Williams (West Palm Beach) added some insurance for the Bulls in the fourth with her seventh home run of the year. Williams needs only one more homer to tie the freshman record, set by Medina (Tampa) back in 2011.
No. 25 USF (27-8, 1-0) busted the game wide open in the fifth thanks to a grand slam by Medina to right center. It was Medina's 24th career home run, tying her for fourth all-time at USF and gave the Bulls a commanding 6-0 lead heading into the sixth inning.
Nevins (Pinellas Park) had her bid at a perfect game and no-hitter broken up in the sixth after an error and an RBI single by Maddy Schiappa cut the Bulls' lead to 6-1.
The Huskies added another run in the seventh but were unable to complete the comeback as Nevins posted her 15th and final strikeout to end the game. The senior lefty picked up her 16th win of the season and moved within four victories of tying Monica Triner for first all-time at USF.
Game two of Saturday's doubleheader against Connecticut will begin at 3:15 p.m.
